Ruby Sue Quilt Pattern - The Clover Version

Ruby Sue Quilt Pattern - The Clover Version

It’s been a minute since I shared a Ruby Sue quilt with you…so today, I’m excited to show you a version I started last year and just recently finished up: The Clover Version!

The Ruby Sue pattern so far

The Ruby Sue quilt pattern is one of our newer patterns, released less than one year ago (in June 2025). I was inspired by improv quilting, but I wanted to make something that was less stressful and more accessible for even beginner quilters. I love this fun, stripe-y quilt pattern…and the samples it inspired!

My first sample was the girly, playful Ruby Sue Cover quilt, inspired by our sweet pup herself. (Side note: It’s so wild to see how little she still was in the cover quilt photos! 🥹 She’s grown up so much since then.) At the same time, I made a Ruby Sue pet bed, which uses some similar colors.

Next, I shared the bright and bold Beach Day version (which, by the way, was our most popular quilt kit of 2025!) and then the calm and peaceful Sea Glass sample.

After making a couple punchy and bold samples (the Cover and Beach Day versions), I realized I wanted to make an earthier Ruby Sue…and so, I came up with my idea for the Clover colorway!

My new Clover Ruby Sue quilt

I actually started my Clover quilt not long after my Beach Day quilt…but you know how life gets. It took a little time to get it finished. But it’s finally all quilted, bound, and ready to share!

Like my other Ruby Sue quilts, I made this version in the throw size (60” x 70”).

FABRICS

I knew I wanted my Clover sample to feel a little more muted and soft than my other Ruby Sue quilts. That meant I needed to pull fabrics with a little less contrast and a bit less saturation than my other colorways.

Since I was going for an earthy vibe, I immediately settled on some greens and browns. It definitely felt earthy, but my pull didn’t really come together until I reached for the pink. It’s not the most obvious color for an earthy quilt, but I was inspired by the peaches and greens I used in my Knitted Blooms Cover quilt. The pinks felt like an extension of those peach colors, and the pinks I chose have a really cozy and natural feel…like clover blossoms in a meadow!

I ended up using half-yard cuts, with a mix of Robert Kaufman Kona and AGF PURE Solids:

  • Blossomed (AGF)
  • Crystal Pink (AGF)
  • Dill (Kona)
  • English Toffee (AGF)
  • Leather (Kona)
  • Matcha (AGF)
  • Miami Sunset (AGF)
  • Pistachio (AGF)
  • Sweet Macadamia (AGF)

I already loved my fabric pull when I started cutting, but I have to say, it really sang once I started piecing the blocks! The finished quilt top has exactly the earthy nature feel I was going for, but in a really sweet and surprising way.

I feel so calm and happy looking at this colorway…and I hope you do too!

You can make your own nature-inspired quilt with our Ruby Sue Clover quilt kits! Fair warning: We’ve sold out of our other Ruby Sue quilt kits multiple times, so don’t be surprised if this one sells out quickly too.

Here's a peek at the strip piecing that's involved with this pattern. It comes together SO quickly and in a super rewarding way.

QUILTING, BACKING, AND BINDING

The Ruby Sue quilt pattern looks great with all kinds of quilting. I got the Cover and Beach Day quilts longarmed, Liz did free motion feathers on the Sea Glass quilt, and I did the pattern-suggested domestic quilting design for my pet bed sample.

But for this one, I went back to an old classic: my favorite straight line quilting in a crosshatch pattern. For this one I used a 60 degree diagonal, with lines around one inch apart (using a cream thread). Just like I expected, it turned out beautifully. I don’t think there’s a bad way to quilt a Ruby Sue!

For the quilt backing, I used Midsummer Array from Art Galley Fabrics. It’s part of Sharon Holland’s Midsummer collection…and you may have noticed that I really love that collection! I’ve used Midsummer fabrics as backings on my Daydreamer Homespun, Miami Sunset Mountain Horizon 2.0, and Sugar Plum Petite Plaid quilts. The collection has the sweetest floral prints, and I love using them on all kinds of quilts!

I especially like how the flowers contrast with the stripes and rectangles of the Ruby Sue quilt top. And of course, the pinks and greens of the quilt top perfectly tie into the colors of the backing fabric.

I bound my Clover quilt with Cameo Lavender, which also comes from the Midsummer collection! It’s a soft, delicate purple print that also matches the backing, and the lavender color keeps the natural, earthy feel of the quilt top.

The finished quilt really does put in mind a beautiful meadow…the kind Ruby Sue would love to roll around in! And since I want to wrap myself up in this quilt and live in it, maybe I’m not so different from her! 😂
