Mountain Horizon 2.0 Quilt Pattern - The Miami Sunset Version

Mountain Horizon 2.0 Quilt Pattern - The Miami Sunset Version

Today I have a new Mountain Horizon quilt to share with you…and it's the first one that’s not actually mountain themed! I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, and I’m excited to finally tell you all about it.

The Mountain Horizon 2.0 quilt pattern

While the original Mountain Horizon quilt pattern launched seven years ago (in 2018), the updated Mountain Horizon 2.0 only released in July of this year.

The new pattern keeps the beautiful mountain blocks, but it’s actually surprisingly different from the old version! It has more sizes, uses new construction techniques, and (my favorite thing about it) it works with our curved acrylic template set.

I always loved the Mountain Horizon pattern, but I have to say that I think the new 2.0 version is an even more enjoyable project! I sewed up the Blue Ridge-inspired Mountain Horizon 2.0 cover quilt right at launch, and I shared the Cascade version soon after. Then I made another mountain-inspired sample with the Glacier Bay version.

I just adore all of those quilts…but for my final sample (for now), I wanted to try something entirely different!

Mountain Horizon 2.0 - The Miami Sunset version

I spent a lot of time looking at mountains when I made my Mountain Horizon colorways. As I looked at the pattern, though, I realized I didn’t have to make all my samples look like mountains. In fact, I could go in a very different direction…to the ocean! Instead of snow-capped peaks, I could create a tropical sea scene. And so the Miami Sunset version was born.

Just like my previous Mountain Horizon quilts, I made this one in a throw size (51” x 68”)...but the similarities end there!

FABRICS

After landing on a typical theme, I narrowed my inspiration down to a sunset reflecting on the water…which meant warm yellows, peaches, and pinks.

I used seven PURE Solids from Art Gallery Fabrics:

  • Crystal Pink (A)
  • Blossomed (B)
  • Apricot Crepe (C)
  • Miami Sunset (D)
  • Summer Sun (E)
  • White Linen (F)
  • Buttermilk (G)

I created a gradient with the pinks and peaches to create the effect of the sun on the water, and then I turned the yellows into a balmy evening sky.

The effect looks so warm and inviting (which is actually kind of nice to think about as we are heading into winter and colder days ahead). I can almost feel the last rays of the sun on my face! I’m not sure if the sunny colors make it the perfect summer quilt…or if it’s the perfect vitamin D substitute during the dark days of winter.

Either way, I love how the colors look together…and I love how different it looks from my mountain samples! It’s exactly what I set out to create.

If you love it too, you can find the Miami Sunset quilt kit in the shop and make your own!

QUILTING, BACKING, AND BINDING

I wanted this unique quilt to have equally special quilting, so I handed it off to Lo & Behold team member Dorathy to work some custom quilting magic.

She used a beautiful design that, like the cover quilt, uses quilting to make rays shine from the suns…but her design creates more separation between the suns and the mountains/water, which seems perfect for this sample. I love how the horizontal lines create such movement across the quilt, almost like the waves of the ocean.

Didn’t she do an amazing job? I loved my quilt top…but the quilting really takes it to the next level.

I backed this one with August Remembrance (from AGF’s Midsummer collection). The colors coordinate so well with the quilt top, and the flowers play up the summery feel of the palette.

For binding, I used Bougainvillea (another PURE Solid). I wanted something just a little darker than the pink and peach fabrics that make up the water segments…almost like the darkening edges of the horizon as the sun sets.

The finished project feels so warm and serene. When you can’t make it to the beach to watch a sunset, this quilt is the next best thing!

Make your own Mountain Horizon 2.0 quilt

If you haven’t been sure about making a mountain quilt, I hope this sample helps you imagine new possibilities for the Mountain Horizon pattern! It’s a fun make with a beautiful result…no matter what horizon you’re inspired by.

As a reminder, Mountain Horizon 2.0 works with our acrylic template set, so you can make cutting faster and easier. Or you can stick with the templates included in the pattern! Our guide to working with templates can help you decide.

QUILT KITS

In addition to the Miami Sunset quilt kit, we carry three other Mountain Horizon kits in the shop:

Or, since Mountain Horizon 2.0 is fat quarter friendly, you can use one of our fabric bundles to create your quilt!
