Mosaic Star Quilt - The Blossoming Version

Mosaic Star Quilt - The Blossoming Version

It’s been almost a year since I sewed up my last Mosaic Star quilt, so I’ve been itching to make another one. Meet the Blossoming version!

The Mosaic Star quilt pattern

If you’ve been with us for a few years, you might remember that Mosaic Star was exclusive to Triangle School when we first opened the course in 2022! We released it as a standalone pattern a little later.

But because I specifically designed this pattern for Triangle School, Mosaic Star is a great skill builder. I stuffed each block with different kinds of triangles (like half-square triangles, half-rectangle triangles, flying geese, and diamond-in-a-square blocks), so you get to practice your triangle-piecing techniques over and over.

This pattern works so well for leveling up your piecing skills…and I also happen to think it makes a beautiful, unique star quilt!

I’ve made five Mosaic Star samples over the past five years. Aside from the cover quilt, I’ve made a couple two-tone versions (one with with Kona Doeskin and Snow and the other with AGF Magnetism and Mink) and two print versions (one with the Sketchbook collection and one with the Flower Bloom collection)

My Blossoming Mosaic Star

Today, I’m excited to show you Mosaic Star number six!

FABRICS AND COLORS

I wanted to choose colors that felt easy, and it just so happens that Art Gallery Fabrics has curated some beautiful color bundles for their PURE Solids. (We carry all of them in the shop.) Choosing one of those felt like an easy yet beautiful route…a real no brainer!

I picked the Blossoming fat quarter bundle. With the Mosaic Star pattern, I love using similar colors and values for the foreground, and this palette was perfect for that. Keeping colors a bit subtle makes the quilt feel cohesive…but more importantly, it gives the top a twinkly effect, perfect for a star quilt!

The Blossoming bundle includes these colors:

  • Ethereal Pink
  • Cotton Candy
  • Crystal Pink
  • Quartz Pink
  • Blossomed
  • Cinnamon
  • Miami Sunset
  • Grapefruit
  • Coral Reef
  • Flamingo
  • Cherry Lipgloss
  • Dragon Fruit
  • Spiceberry
  • Weathered Brick
  • Dried Roses
  • Cabernet
  • Plum Preserve
  • Purple Wine
  • Verve Violet
  • Very Berry
  • Raspberry Rose
  • Festival Fuchsia
  • Sweet Pink

I sewed up the large throw size (72” x 72”), so I only needed 16 fat quarters for the top. I found a good use for the leftover fat quarters though…more on that in a minute.

Once I’d picked my foreground colors, I had to find the right background. These gorgeous pinks, purples, and oranges needed a neutral background, but I wanted something more interesting than white.

To be clear, I don’t have anything against white backgrounds on quilts! I’ve used white (and off-white) on many quilts over the years…including the cover quilt for Mosaic Star. But I think a lot of the time I can find more interesting neutrals that add a little something extra. And in this case, I was sure the fat quarters could hold their own against something bolder.

So for my background, I picked Lava Rock…my new favorite AGF neutral! It’s so warm, and it’s dark enough to add a really pretty contrast to the other shades. Doesn’t it remind you of stars shining in the night sky? Don’t be surprised if you see Lava Rock popping up in more future quilts!

The Blossoming fat quarters together with the Lava rock background make this version feel so fresh and modern. I loved how it turned out, so we’re offering quilt kits for this colorway!

BACKING, BINDING, AND QUILTING

I had fun with the backing on this version...I ended up using AGF’s Goose March (from the Cottage Grove collection). The colors go beautifully with the stars on the top, and the geese add such an adorable and whimsical touch! I think it’s just the right vibe for a twinkly star quilt.

And remember those extra fat quarters I mentioned earlier? I used them to make a multicolor binding! It’s a fun extra touch that adds to the overall twinkle effect.

I had this sample quilted by Megan at Blue Ridge Quilt Co. using the Starry Realm panto by Sew Shabby Quilting. I already loved the movement and glimmer from the colors, but this panto adds even more sparkle!

The end result is the perfect sparkly star quilt that makes me happy every time I look at it.
