Homecoming Quilt Pattern - my cover quilt

I designed this quilt as a gift to myself during one of the craziest times of my life. The symmetry and bold shapes reminded me of the comforts of home. After four unexpected and extremely long months of temporary housing, this quilt was all that I could think about. This design symbolizes warmth, comfort and a sense of belonging.

My initial draft of the design only used two colors (because ya'll know how much I love two-color quilts!)  There's just something about the simplicity and character of a quilt that has minimal colors. Its calming in the sense that, your mind doesn't have to figure out how to categorize it. Your eyes don't bounce around as much and you're simply invited to sit and rest on the overall design on the quilt- not so much on the fabrics. They're almost soothing, in a sense.

I then decided to spice things up and see what would happen if I added extra colors. For my cover quilt, I knew that wanted to use Art Gallery Fabrics, since their fabrics are just so soft and drape-y. I have recently fallen in love with quilts that have darker backgrounds (have you read my Sage Vintage Lace blog post??). As I was looking through all of their colors, Magnetism really caught my eye. But what to pair with it? Ohhhhh, how I love me some peaches. I was immediately drawn to these four colors. I love that they are slightly similar to each other, but yet they each bring something different to the table.

The colors are Art Gallery Pure solids:

• Peach Sherbet (a typo on the chip)
• Apricot Crepe
• Cinnamon
• Raw Gold
• Magnetism

I have a quilt kit for this exact quilt in my shop! You can even choose to add backing and binding!

In case you're wondering, I got these awesome swatch chips from Woven & Woolly. They're so helpful!

Raw Gold might be my all time favorite color. I knew that I wanted that to be the "star" of this quilt; although...all of the fabrics seem to have an equal representation. I started with Raw Gold as my "Color 1", then ombre'd out from there.

These colors are tricky to photograph! Since Magnetism is so contrasted with the lighter colors, my camera kept wanting to "auto-correct" to make the other colors lighter. I think the photo above is an accurate depiction.

It took a little bit of work to make sure that all color required equal amounts of fabric. Essentially, I wanted you to be able to change your mind after you picked out your fabrics. It's hard to shop for fabrics while you envision how it'll look in the color placement of your quilt! Now, you're able to switch things up at the last minute. ( I know this indecisive process all too well, haha).

For the backing, I decided to use Sharon Hollands, Rambling Rose in Briar fabric from her Sprirted Collection. Y'all, these colors with this print is the PERFECT combination. I love me a good floral backing!

I used Raw Gold for my binding, because I couldn't get enough of it! haha.

I hand-quilted my binding, which is my favorite way to finish a quilt! You can find the tutorial for that here.

I sent this quilt to Walker Quilt Co. for quilting! As always, they did a PERFECT job! We used "Mesmerizaiton" from Sunny Stitches (sold through Quilting It) and I love how it plays with the symmetry of the quilt!

After I made my cover quilt, I couldn't stop thinking about that Cinnamon color. I ordered some more of it, them BAM. I just HAD to create a two-color quilt with it!

I used Cinnamon as the Background and Sweet Macadamia as the Color (stripes). That Sweet Macadamia color is such a good neutral. It's soft and subtle with a hint of a peachy-pink. I love it!

I couldn't resist using ANOTHER Sharon Holland print as my backing. Cinnamon and Sweet Macadamia pair so well with this. Sharon really knocked it out of the park with her "Spirited" collection. The entire vibe of those fabrics are right up my alley!

I sent this  to Stitch Mode Quilts for long-arm quilting. Sarah also happens to be one of my amazing pattern testers....see pattern tester quilts here. She recently started up her long-arm business and you know I had to have her quilt for me! She did such a beautiful job stitching this up for me. The design is perfect, the attention to detail is amazing...and overall I'm just thrilled with how it turned out!

I decided to bind the quilt with Sweet Macadamia. I didn't want to introduce another color, especially since the backing is so gorgeous and vibrant!
