Pansy Patch Quilt Pattern - The Forget-Me-Not Version

Pansy Patch Quilt Pattern - The Forget-Me-Not Version

The Pansy Patch quilt pattern is out now! I’ve shared some peeks at today’s sample before, but I finally get to share all the details that make it so lovely. Are you ready?

The Pansy Patch quilt pattern

Pansy Patch is the latest Lo & Behold Stitchery quilt pattern…and it’s a fun one! This block-based pattern comes in nine sizes and three colorways, is precut friendly, and uses strip piecing for faster and more accurate piecing.

The pattern design features sweet flowers that have a cross-stitch/knitted/block printed vibe…making this an extra fun quilt for anyone who loves other crafts!

I’ve made four Pansy Patch quilt samples so far…and this is the first one I made! In fact, today’s quilt actually started out as the planned cover quilt, before I ended up going in a different direction. I still just love this one though, and I hope you will too. Meet the Forget-Me-Not version!

My Forget-Me-Not quilt sample

I sewed this version up in the large throw size (a wonderfully generous 75” x 80”)…and as I pulled my fabric, cut my pieces, and start sewing, I really did have every intention of using it as the cover quilt! Something light and springy seemed perfect for the floral quilt pattern.

This sample definitely meets the light and springy brief! But as I pieced it, I realized that (lovely at it was!) this colorway didn’t really align with my vision for the cover. What I actually wanted was something dark and textured…though it took making this springy version to figure that out. Funny how that works!

So by the end of piecing this one, I knew it wasn’t going to be the cover…but I still LOVED the direction. And now, when I look at this and the cover side by side, I love how different they look! The cover is much more dramatic and moody (as you’ll see next week), while this one is so sweet and fresh looking. Amazing the difference fabric choice can make!

🤔

Why are the seams different?
I started the Forget-Me-Not version so early in the pattern-writing process that I hadn’t nailed down the construction yet. The finished blocks have the same shapes and design, but the seam lines on this sample look a little different than on the other version and the finished pattern.

FABRICS

My fabric pull for this version started with Forget-Me-Not flowers. Normally when I think of flowers, I (like most people!) picture pinks and greens. I wanted to do something a little different, and Forget-Me-Nots were the perfect inspiration with their blues.

I used all Art Galley Fabrics PURE Solids on this quilt, starting with Adrift for the background. It provides a really nice grayish blue canvas for the flowers. It’s such an interesting color that sometimes reads a little more blue and sometimes a little more green. It all depends on the light!

I used Rosemary for the stems and leaves, while for the flowers themselves, I went with a range of true blue and purples. I wanted a lot of variety in my flower colors (unlike the cover, where I stuck to a handful of colors), so I pulled 13 fat eighths:

  • Aero Blue
  • Amethyst
  • Blueberry Zest
  • Dusk
  • Foxglove
  • Hydrangea
  • Icicle
  • Lavender Water
  • Monet
  • North Star
  • Parisian Blue
  • Periwinkle
  • Royal Cobalt

With so many flower and flower-inspired names (Hydrangea! Foxglove! Periwinkle! Monet!), I felt like I was sewing up my own little garden! I had so much fun working on this colorway.

Finally, I decided to add a little contrast with the accent flowers. Instead of blue, I went white with AGF Snow, using Olive Oil for the centers. The accent flowers act like little filler flowers in a bouquet, and I just love the overall effect! This makes the perfect springtime quilt. You can practically smell the blooms every time you look at it!

I got such amazing feedback about my fabric pull when I shared sneak peeks…so I’m happy to tell you we have this version available as a quilt kit in the shop!

BACKING, BINDING, AND QUILTING

I wanted to continue the blue flowers on the quilt backing, and I found the perfect fabric in AGF’s Delicate Balance Mist. It’s from Sharon Holland’s Potager collection, and it has the most darling little blue flowers. (If it looks familiar, that’s because I used Delicate Balance Dahlia as the backing on my Daydreamer Homespun quilt!)

I finished this quilt off with AGF Olive Oil as the binding, which is what I used for the accent flower centers. The binding helps to draw those little accents out more, and it adds a lovely contrast to the blues everywhere else.

I had this one quilted by Sara at Stitch Lab Quilting. Usually with a directional quilt pattern like Pansy Patch, I try to steer clear of horizontal and vertical lines that might compete with the piecing…but in this case, I fell in love with the Retro Sheets pantograph (from Sew Shabby quilting)! It has strong horizontal repeat, but a vintage repeating pattern felt just right for this sample (just like the repeating panto I chose for the Sugar Plum Petite Plaid quilt). It adds an extra nostalgic element…which is perfect for a Forget-Me-Not quilt!

Overall, this quilt feels sweet, subtle and delicate. And even if that’s not quite the direction I wanted for my cover quilt, I’m just head over heels for Forget-Me-Not as its own colorway. I’m so glad I kept going with it!

Make your own Pansy Patch quilt

The Pansy Patch quilt pattern is available now, so you can sew up your own version…whether you want to make a Forget-Me-Not quilt like I did or design your own take!

My Forget-Me-Not sample used the modern colorway from the pattern, but you can also make the traditional (two color) or patchwork colorways. And even if you stick to the modern colorway, you can get very different results depending on if you choose fat eighths, fat quarters, or yardage for your flowers!

There are so many ways to play around with this pattern!

QUILT KITS

Over in the shop, you can find the Forget-Me-Not quilt kit in a large throw size, along with three other Pansy Patch quilt kits:

You can even add on backing and binding fabrics to make the exact same version as me!
