Celtic Crossing 2.0 Quilt - the Evolve version
Suzy Quilts has done it again with a beautiful fabric collection! Earlier this year, I made an Upscale Plaid Quilt with her Duval collection, so when I saw her newest collection, Evolve, I felt inspired to make something with it too! I love how the two collections have completely different colors, but blend beautifully together & complement each other so well.
I decided to use Evolve in one of my most versatile, beginner friendly patterns, Celtic Crossing 2.0. Celtic Crossing 2.0 is one of my earliest pattern designs, but is one that I always come back to! It's perfect for larger scale prints and is a great one for beginning quilters. It's Precut 10" square, fat quarter, quarter yard AND half yard friendly. We love this pattern so much, it's actually the one that I teach in our online course, Beginner Quilting Academy. If you're wanting to learn to quilt or need a little refresher on the basic skills, the brand new BQA opens for enrollment on Sept 14th, sign up for the waitlist here!
Art Gallery Fabrics recently (like maybe in the last couple of years?) started producing Precut 10" squares for their collections, and that's exactly what I used for this quilt. Sometimes it's nice to just pick up some pre-cuts & not have to think about mixing & matching fabrics. I also used a pack of pre-cut 2.5" strips for the background, which reduced my cutting time significantly.
I decided to make the Square Throw, which finishes at 58" x 58". This size quilt is a great choice if you are looking for a quicker finish or are newer to quilting. If this is your first quilt, you may want to start with a baby size, as tackling a smaller quilt gives you time to practice while reducing the overwhelm that can come with larger projects. Baby size quilts are also smaller so they work with just about any machine.
For this quilt I used the following fabrics:
- (1) Precut 10" pack of AGF Evolve by Suzy Quilts
- (1) Bella Snow Junior Jelly Roll
- Backing: AGF Meadow Matcha
- Binding: AGF Diamond Stripe Honeymoon
We have kits for this exact quilt in our shop
I ended up using AGF Meadow Matcha as the backing. I've been really gravitating towards greens of all shades lately & love how the cream flowers just add the perfect amount of movement to the back. It's really the sweetest fabric. Adding AGF Diamond Stripe Honeymoon was a fun pop of color & framed out the quilt so well. This fabric felt similar to using a striped binding, but the diamonds added a special little touch that felt really unique to this collection.
I went with a quilting design using 2" horizontal & vertical lines. It's such a simple design and really lets the fabric collection shine while providing just the right amount of texture while the more open quilting leaves the quilt very flowy. I used a cream thread to blend in best with all of the colors.
If you love all of these fabrics with this pattern, but are wanting a darker background, we made a mockup using AGF Nova. While I haven't made this sample yet, I am really loving the stark contrast between the fabric collection & the dark navy. It's so hard to choose which version is my favorite!
