I’ve shared some very Christmasy quilts over the past couple weeks…and today I’ve got a completely different take on a holiday quilt. Meet the Christmas Mint version of Homespun!

The Homespun quilt pattern

The Homespun quilt pattern was designed for our 2026 Block of the Month program, Homespun Collective. I wanted the pattern to be a real skill builder, with lots of different elements that would let us practice tons of techniques…from essentials like a scant ¼” seam to methods like snowballing corners.

And I'm so excited to share that Homespun Collective is coming back for 2027! If you missed out this year (or would love to make another Homespun quilt alongside us), you can join the waitlist now to be among the first to hear when registration opens on November 12th.

The design itself was inspired by handmade crafts of all kinds. I drew inspiration from everything from cross stitch to furniture making…and plenty in between!

With that inspiration in mind, I made the Homespun Cover quilt in subtle Americana colors (lots of blues and creams). I wanted that version to feel super traditional and homey…just like the crafts that inspired it!

We took our next sample in a very different direction. For the Daydreamer version, I chose a modern palette in classic Lo & Behold colors (like purples and pinks).

I love how the different colorways emphasize different elements of the Homespun design, highlighting certain blocks or motifs…which is why I was excited to try out a third colorway: Christmas Mint!

The Christmas Mint quilt

Just like with the first two Homespun quilt samples, the Christmas Mint version was made as written in the pattern, which means it finished at 76" x 87", which is a generous Large Throw, or even a Twin! (If you are participating in the 2026 Homespun Block of the Month, we have instructions for adding borders to turn your Homespun quilt into a bed size inside the Homespun Hub.)

That meant all the cutting and assembly was just the same…except in completely different colors!

One of my favorite things about the Christmas Mint colorway is the story behind how it came to be. This beautiful palette actually came from a friend of Lo & Behold Stitchery, Kendra at Piece Fabric Co. She mocked up Homespun in Kona Solids, using the most incredible mix of pinks, greens, and all the lovely shades in between.

Y’all, it was love at first sight. If you’ve seen any of my other holiday quilts, you know I love using a slightly unconventional color palette (like in the Cactus Flower Retro Ornaments quilt, Spiceberry Petite Plaid tree skirt, and Holiday Knitted Blooms quilt). Kendra’s palette felt so true to my style, and I knew immediately that I wanted to make it into a quilt!

I loved her version so much that I reached out to see if we could offer it as an official Homespun quilt kit, and she graciously agreed. We then recolored the palette using Art Gallery PURE Solids in place of Kona Solids.

As with our other Homespun quilts, the Christmas Mint version uses 21 total fabrics:

  • A - Matcha
  • B - Lakefront
  • C - Cherry Lipgloss
  • D - Apricot Crepe
  • E - Weathered Brick
  • F - Hibiscus
  • G - Cactus Flower
  • H - London Red
  • I - Spiceberry
  • J - Secret Lagoon
  • K - Evergreen
  • L - Clover
  • M - Mint Glow
  • N - Asparagus
  • O - Flamingo
  • P - Olive Oil
  • Q - Seaglass
  • R - Emerald
  • S - Cotton Candy
  • T - Quartz Pink
  • U - Candied Cherry

(You’ll spot quite a few of my favorites in that list. Like I said, Kendra’s colors really spoke to me!)

Aren’t they beautiful together? Our sample sewist, Dorathy, did such a wonderful job piecing this quilt top! I love how this colorway immediately draws your attention to the center star and then encourages your gaze to move slowly outward, layer by layer. It’s such a stunning collection of colors, and the careful arrangement makes the whole quilt sing. And as gorgeous as the mockup was, it turned out even better in real fabrics!

BACKING, QUILTING, AND BINDING

As soon as the quilt top was finished, I had the perfect quilt backing ready: Jingle Plaid from AGF’s Adventale Collection (designed by Katarina Roccella). You might remember seeing this fabric before…in my Scrappy Hovering Hawks quilt!

I like that it feels fun and festive without feeling purely Christmasy. The pink and gold makes a nice contrast to the very green quilt top, while still picking up colors from the Christmas Mint colorway. (After you see the backing, I think you notice the Color P Olive Oil units a lot more!)

After having my first two Homespun quilts longarm quilted, I knew I wanted this one to be machine quilted. I flipped through our Quilt Finishing Fellowship workbook for ideas, and I found the perfect motif: diagonal lines in alternating sets of three and five lines.

Dorathy quilted the lines within each group ½" apart, leaving 2" between the groups. The result is a beautiful argyle effect, and the best part is that it’s just as easy to achieve as traditional straight-line quilting!

We used Aurifil 5003 thread for the quilting, which is just bold enough to help the quilting stand out a little more. (We stock this color in the shop!) I absolutely love how it turned out!

To finish things off, I chose Golden Bronze (another AGF PURE Solid) for the binding. It provides a nice contrast to the edges of the quilt without drawing too much attention and distracting from the blocks.

This quilt was truly a collaborative effort, from Kendra’s beautiful color palette to Dorathy’s lovely stitching, and I’m just smitten with how it all came together. And as you can see, Ruby Sue is too!

Make your own Homespun quilt quilt

The Homespun quilt pattern is available exclusively as part of our Homespun Collective block of the month. If you weren’t able to participate this year, I have good news: Homespun Collective is returning for 2027! You can join the Homepsun 2027 waitlist now…and in the meantime, you can plan your pull with the Homespun coloring page on PreQuilt.

Plus, we’re also hosting a brand-new block of the month. More details (including the design) are coming soon, but you can get on the new 2027 BOM waitlist today!

I’ve had such a good year sewing Homespun quilts alongside so many of you…and I hope to sew with you again soon!

Happy quilting!
